Vielleicht soll dies den Appetit der Zuhörer auf die jeweilige gesamte CD anregen. Auf dieser Platte sind Spielweise und Interpretation wichtiger als die Auswahl der einzelnen Werke. Das hier zusammengestellte Programm besteht aus kurzen Stücken und einzelnen Sätzen aus längeren Werken. Sie sollen Yo-Yo Mas unglaubliche Vielseitigkeit demonstrieren, seine spektakuläre technische und musikalische Begabung, aber auch seine verblüffende Fähigkeit, in alles, was er spielt, den gleichen Einsatz und die gleiche emotionale Konzentration zu investieren. In der Zusammenstellung des Programms ist keine Logik zu erkennen, allenfalls dass es mit einem Cello-Solo beginnt und endet. Bach, den Yo-Yo Ma mit moderner Stimmung präsentiert, wenn er allein spielt, und tiefer gestimmt, wenn er mit dem Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra gemeinsam musiziert, mag den Titel der CD rechtfertigen. Aber Bach scheint hier schon fast ein wenig fehl am Platz. Ihn neben O'Connor und Piazzolla zu stellen ist stillos, selbst wenn die Tangos wundervoll klingen. Die Transkription von Dvoráks schönem Slawischen Tanz (e-moll) klingt trotz der Beteiligung des Violinisten Itzhak Perl und dessen prächtiger Klangfarbe nach Filmmusik: alles Show und billige Effekte. [+]Die Spielweise ist der Kern der Sache, und diese ist verblüffend. Nicht nur die von Yo-Yo Ma, sondern auch die seiner Kollegen, von den Sängern Bobby McFerrin und Alison Krauss bis hin zu dem Pianisten Emanuel Ax, Yo-Yo Mas Duopartner seit 25 Jahren, mit dem er das Finale der Zweiten Cello-Sonate von Johannes Brahms spielt; und dieses Stück werden Sie nachher vor sich hin summen. -Edith Eisler.

Eigenschaften Voice of An Angel / Charlotte Church:Diejenigen, die von geschmacklosem Stilmix die Nase voll haben, müssen beim Anblick dieser CD, die über eine halbe Million Mal in Europa verkauft wurde, keine Gänsehaut bekommen. Hier ist weder etwas von der kindlichen Sexualität einer Vanessa-Mae, noch von der triefenden, trügerischen Romantik eines Andrea Bocelli zu spüren. Dies sind allerdings noch keine ausreichenden Gründe, sich Voice of an Angel zuzulegen. Die 12-jährige Sopranistin Charlotte Church aus Wales ist so erfrischend süß und eine solch sympathische Persönlichkeit (mit einer gerade angemessenen Portion an Extrovertiertheit), daß man sie fast lieber zum Abendessen zu Gast hätte, als ihrem Gesang auf CD zu lauschen. Ihrem kleinen, attraktiven, manchmal etwas wackligen, aber immer authentischen Sopran gelang vielleicht gerade deshalb der Sprung an die Spitze der britischen Hitparaden, weil er so gut in die dort weit verbreitete Tradition von Knabenchören paßt. Außerdem handelt es sich bei vielen Werken auf dieser CD um geistliche Lieder, wie etwa The Lord's Prayer und Ave Maria. Vielleicht gewinnt Charlotte Church sogar einige neue Anhänger dank des keltischen Touchs, mit dem insbesondere die hier vertretenen walisischen Volkslieder sowie das Stück Danny Boy versehen sind. Trotz allem handelt es sich jedoch bei dieser CD wohl eher um ein weiteres, kurzlebiges Medienphänomen, als um den Beginn einer dauerhaften Karriere. -David Patrick Stearns.

Eigenschaften Cult / Apocalyptica:1997 tauchten die vier Finnen mit ihren Celli und einigen gekonnt auf die Streichinstrumente umgesetzten Metallica-Songs in der Szene auf. Apocalyptica, das sind vier klassisch ausgebildete Cellisten, die aus einem Spaß heraus anfingen Metallica-Songs auf ihren Celli zu spielen. Das Resultat war verblüffend, ob nun auf ihren ersten beiden Alben, Apocalyptica Plays Metallica By Four Cellos und Inquisition Symphony oder live, wo das Quartett, ganz in schwarz gekleidet, eine unglaubliche Spielfreude an den Tag legt. Songs wie "Master Of Puppets" oder "Enter Sandman" erwachen zu neuem Leben, ebenso wie andere Stücke, die sich Apocalyptica bei Pantera, Faith No More oder Sepultura geborgt haben. Schon das zweite Album brachte neben Fremdkompositionen auch drei Tracks aus der Feder des 25-jährigen kreativen Kopfes des Quartetts, Eicca Toppinen. Nichts lag also näher, als sich für Album Nummer drei fast ganz auf die Künste Herrn Toppinens zu verlassen. So hören wir auf Cult neben zwei Metallica-Songs "Fight Fire With Fire" und "Until It Sleeps" sowie einer Edward Grieg-Komposition, ausschließlich eigene Stücke. Dabei gelingt Apocalyptica auch hier der Spagat zwischen gestrichenem und gesägtem Hardrock und so etwas wie moderner Klassik. Die Dankesliste im Booklet liest sich dann auch wie eine Art Referenz- oder Inspirationsliste. Wird dort doch neben Metallica, Biohazard, Slayer und Sepultura auch den Avantgardekomponisten Dimitri Schostakowitsch und Aavo Pärt gedankt. [+]Erstmals benutzen Apocalyptica auf Cult übrigens neben ihren Celli weitere Instrumente: orchestrale Percussion und einen Kontrabass. -Thomas Bohnet.
